Essentially a continuation of the Street Fighter series, Street Fighter IV features models and backgrounds in 3D, but the gameplay remains on a traditional 2D plane. According to producer Yoshinori Ono, this was done "to keep the game closer to Street Fighter II." Cited as being quite similar to Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Street Fighter IV adds along 'focus attacks' and ultra moves, not to mention four new characters (Abel, Crimson Viper, Rufus, and El Fuerte). Like its predecessor, however, Street Fighter IV still maintains light, medium, and heavy attacks. Most importantly, Street Fighter IV will offer online multiplayer access and even free downloadable expansion packs, the first being titled "Championship Mode" and being offered for free. Street Fighter IV retails for $59.99.

keatsta: #street_fighter_iv Very quality game, but I'd still rather play 3rd Strike any day of the week. Street Fighter IV may have the appeal of the classic characters returning, but I'm a little too young to get nostalgic over that. SFIII's characters seem much more varied and dynamic to me, and I miss that in the relatively dry fighting of SFIV. Maybe the soon to come Super Street Fighter IV will address this. Also, on a competitive level, SFIV seems to be more turtle-oriented than previous incarnations - usually the most effective strategy is to not approach at all and simply poke until a window opens for your ultra. That may be a bit of an oversimplification, but I still find that IV is, on the whole, more defensively oriented (and therefore boring in my eyes) than 3rd Strike. Jan 8, 10

Omar: #street_fighter_iv Update: Alright, I've had the game for about 5 days now and have already put over 20 hours into it. I think it goes without saying that I'm continuing to enjoy myself. My initial enthusiasm has not waned and I'm still obsessing/thinking about this game just as much now as when I first got it. If this obsession doesn't go away in the near future I could be in trouble. Feb 24, 09

dialupinternetuser: #street_fighter_iv Is this related to the same Street Fighter that was on the Genesis? Feb 21, 09

Omar: #street_fighter_iv Man oh man. I love this game. Of course, I love all Street Fighters, so that may not be saying much.

The game is polished.
The game has loads to do even for single players.
The game teaches you things.
The game has great graphics.

The game has all of these things and more (as listed in my pros/cons). But what really makes it awesome, especially right now that it just came out? Is that it's NEW. Most fighting games on the market have been around for many many years, with the previous Street Fighter incarnation released in the early 2000s. So you're seeing people experimenting, you're seeing people trying out new things, you're seeing people make mistakes. It's not just "make a mistake, now you get combo'd to death". There's a lot more strategy in the game right now when playing online, which makes it a lot more intense and fun.

It remains to be seen as to whether this more strategic approach to the game is something that will last as more nuances/exploits/combos are discovered. If so, then Capcom have done a superb job of making a game that is balanced and works from essentially day 1. Feb 20, 09
